Alumni Charity Game 1-15-00
Caps Alumni v. Coconuts Hockey Club
This event was worth attending just to see Steve Kolbe play goal--one of the funniest things I've ever seen! As you might already know, he's a, um, big guy, and didn't have the best balance out there on skates. More than once he just fell right over while trying to make a save, and had a hard time getting back up!! I'm sure Laughlin, who also played, was giving him tons of crap out there.
The fans were amusing as well; there was this one big guy there who went around shirtless except for two coconuts strapped on like a bra, and a grass skirt, and "Go Coconuts," or something like that, painted on his belly. Very enthusiastic in his support indeed. Slapshot was there, and was mobbed by the little kiddies for autographs--I always wonder how he manages to sign with those big claws/paws/whatever on his hands. I don't remember what the final score was, but I think the Alumni came out on top after a slow start. Tim Hunter and Tim Army played great--it was neat to see them out there, as I never saw Hunter as a player. Army had some great moves, though playing against what looked to be teenagers might have given me a false impression! Anyway, it was pretty fun, and I got to meet Halpern, who was in the crowd even though the Caps had a game the next night. If I remember correctly, he got in a little tussle the next night that put him in the box--see what happens when you stay out too late, rookie??
BTW, the lighting at the Ice Gardens was horrible, which accounts for the greenish tint of these pictures.

Kolbe as goalie--you should've seen him sweatin' out there--even before the game! |
