Though I had my doubts about whether the Caps would be in the mood for this event, having played two games in a row, losing last night in Philly, plus Sunday being their normal day off, the picture above shows that they had a pretty good time. The Skills Competition is a fun event for the fans, watching the boys challenge each other to see who can skate the fastest (Bondra, 14.086 sec.), who has the hardest shot (Bondra, 100.00 mph), who has the most accurate shot (Simon, 4 targets in 5 shots), and who is our best goalie (duh).
The black team pretty much crushed the white team, thanks mostly to Olie's great saves, and Billington slacking off! Of course, Biller had to face Bondra, Zed, Bulis and Gonchar, and Olie, shaking in his skates no doubt, had to face those awesome snipers Berube, Yake, Klee, and even (ooooh!) Joe Reekie. Amazingly enough, Reekie was one of the few guys to get one by Johnny Vezina--perhaps he can get on a little streak and actually score one in a game! A new event this year was the "Pass and Score." Three players, starting at the blue line, have to pass the puck, each touching it at least once, and try to score. Though it sounds simple enough, it was quite amusing to see, as some of the trios were a little less than poetic in their dishing schemes. Other fun moments: Zed losing his footing, and then later falling down during the fastest skater--ended up at over 16 seconds. At least one Cap has to fall down during that event--last year it was poor Halpern, who managed to keep himself upright this year. Bulis hitting only one target with eight shots during the accuracy, and then getting heckled by his teammates upon his return to the bench. And good 'ol Jojo just acting the total goof as per normal; it was good to see him, I had almost forgotten what he looked like!
Getting the players helmetless and in a lighthearted mood for a little over an hour is a photographer's dream; thus there are a bunch more pictures than normal--enjoy!
