Caps 2, Filthy 1

9-30-00

This was a pretty sorry display by the Caps until about halfway through the 2nd period; before that, they were totally out of sync, lazy, and just plain pathetic.  John LeClair scored in the 1st, power play goal with Reekie in the box for tripping.  Philly got three power plays in the 1st and 2cnd; the Caps didn't get any until the third (not that they knew what to do with them once they had them!).

In the third, Zed was sprung at center and came in on a breakaway on Boucher.  Like a fool, Bouch came way out of his net to try to poke-check Zed.  Zed just deked around him, and was left with a wide-open net.  I was half-expecting him to miss it anyway, given his propensity for shooting it wide, but he smartly held on to the puck until he was right at the net, and put it in easily.  Bouch lay sprawled on the ice for a few seconds afterwards, almost at the blue line, that's how far he came out.  Tocchet came over to console him, or maybe to yell at him for coming out so far.  I don't think he'll be doing that again anytime soon!

With about 2 minutes left, Dahlen was hauled down behind Boucher, drawing a delayed penalty;  somehow he managed to get the puck to Kono, who got it to Calle sneaking in from the point for a beautiful goal--2-1 Caps!  It was scary those last two minutes, but the boys pulled it out.  Biller was stellar throughout the game, making lots of tough saves.  He's small, but his positioning is so good.  It's definitely different than watching Olie, but he gets the job done.  I think the guys will get used to playing in front of him, which will help out down the stretch when Olie needs a rest.

In the 3rd, Wilson had Beech centering Zed and Bulis, and they seemed to click a little bit.  That could be an exciting line if he leaves it together for awhile--lots of speed and talent, and a bit of grit in Zed.  Hmmm.

Cutta played a decent amount of time and looked really good.  No panic, great passes, and he clearly likes to hit!  Should be interesting to see if he makes the team.  The other two rookies I wanted to see, Farrell and Sutherby, were scratched.  Here's hoping the boys can score a few more on Tuesday against the 'Canes.  Until then, some pictures:
