Caps 3, Hurricanes 5

10-3-00

Well, it's about time!!  Two down, one to go . . .

The above news (which prompted a rather loud ovation from the tiny crowd) is just enough to make you forget about another freakin' loss to the Hurricanes.  Zed had two goals, and the line of Zed, Beech, Bulis was really flying until Wilson split it up in the third, putting Zed and Buli on Oates' wings.  Wilson was shuffling quite a bit in the third, as though he were trying every possible combination in desperate hope that something would click.

The Hurricanes really didn't play that well, which makes the loss a little worrisome.  But, it seems to be just the same old Caps trend of playing down to your opponent, when they should be owning them.

Billington played well again; it seemed like all five goals were scored on a screen--they're going to have to watch that with him--he's not big Olie man, he's little, and needs his crease cleared out so he can see the puck.   The boys didn't do a very good job of that tonight.  Farrell looked a little lost, not as good as he did in camp; Cutta looked confident, even got in a little shoving match with Brind'amour (which led to a penalty that ultimately, after Bondra got one, led to a 5 on 3 on which the Canes scored).  But Wilson didn't punish him for taking a "bad" penalty--his ice time remained consistent afterwards.  With Gonchar back in the fold, it should be interesting to see what happens to these youngsters.  I hope at least one stays around--it's fun having some fresh faces to watch!

Power play was bad as usual; PK was good, but the Caps were lucky that Carolina was missing a bunch of passes/shots, otherwise they would have had 3 more PP goals.  Yake, Niko, and Reekie did not play.

Archie rode the bench for this one

Every time I take a picture of Zed, it seems he's chewing on that thing

Tommy Westlund--he had a goal and an assist

Buli:  "Watchu lookin' at, Westlund?"

Hatcher: "Uhhh.  I'm a dork."

Beech played ok, but still looks a bit tentative at times--understandably so
